KRX vs Nextrade: Korea’s Two Stock Markets Explained

Seeing the same six-digit Korean stock code quoted on KRX and Nextrade does not mean the company is dual-listed. It is one security trading on two venues with separate order books. This guide explains what remains tied to the Korea Exchange, why the two prices can briefly differ, how a broker’s smart order router chooses a venue, and what international investors should check before using Korea’s extended trading day.

The short answer: one share, two execution venues

Key distinction: Samsung Electronics executed on NXT is not a different class of Samsung Electronics from the one executed on KRX. The economic security and shareholder rights are the same; only the venue that matched the buy and sell orders is different.

Why can the same Korean stock trade on both markets?

A listing identifies the security; a venue supplies a place where orders meet. KRX remains the venue on which the company is listed. Nextrade receives bids and offers for selected KRX-listed shares and matches them in a second order book. Multiple venues therefore compete to execute an order in the same security.

This resembles the idea of one US-listed stock trading across several venues, but the Korean details are not interchangeable with US market rules. Korea has its own price limits, reference close, auction windows, order types and broker access model.

Do not use the 2025 launch timetable blindly. Nextrade’s current official page lists main-market executions from 09:00:30 and after-market executions from 15:40. Some launch materials described the broader intended windows as 09:00 and 15:30 starts. Use your broker’s current order notice for the actual trading day.

KRX “post-hours” and NXT “after-market” are not interchangeable labels. Under the multiple-market framework, NXT-eligible securities are excluded from KRX’s 16:00–18:00 off-hours single-price market. KRX closing-price and block-trade facilities also follow their own hours and execution rules, so select the order category as well as the venue.

What KRX, NXT and SOR mean on an order ticket

Under Korea’s multiple-venue framework, securities firms publish best-execution standards and build an order routing process. “SOR” means Smart Order Routing: the broker evaluates available venues under its policy and sends the order to KRX, NXT or both as its system allows. A manual KRX or NXT selection instead directs the order to the chosen venue, subject to the broker’s interface and market eligibility.

  1. You enter the security, side, quantity, price and order type

The ticket may also show KRX, NXT or SOR. Availability differs across brokers, accounts and sessions.

  2. The broker applies your instruction and its execution policy

An SOR can consider quoted price, transaction cost, executable quantity, speed and likelihood of execution. Read the broker’s disclosed priority rules.

  3. The selected order book applies price and time priority

A queue position on KRX is not a queue position on NXT. Changing venues may cancel and resubmit rather than preserve priority.

  4. The fill returns to the same account

The contract note or execution screen should identify the venue. Settlement remains part of the integrated Korean market process.

Why can KRX and NXT show different prices?

Each venue has its own bids, offers, depth and order queue. If a buyer lifts the NXT offer while no equivalent KRX order trades, the latest NXT execution can differ from the latest KRX execution. Thin liquidity, fast news and the pre- or after-market make the gap more visible. Routing and arbitrage usually put pressure on large discrepancies, but they do not force both last-traded prices to be identical at every instant.

Example A

Better displayed offer on NXT

KRX offers 10 shares at KRW 50,100 while NXT offers 100 shares at KRW 50,050. A buy order may obtain the lower displayed price on NXT if that liquidity is still available.

Example B

Lower price but insufficient size

NXT offers only 1 share at the best price and KRX offers 500 shares one tick higher. The best route for a 500-share order depends on quantity, fees, partial fills and the broker’s policy—not just the first price.

Example C

Evening news

After the KRX close, NXT can continue trading until 20:00. Its evening price may react to new information, but the official KRX close for that day does not change.

A trading app may label its headline number as KRX, NXT or a consolidated view. Before interpreting a percentage change, confirm the venue, timestamp, delay status and reference price used by the data vendor.

What stays the same—and what actually changes?

Market-wide controls are coordinated. Official policy states that the same daily price range, trading halts, circuit breakers, sidecars, surveillance and T+2 clearing and settlement framework apply to NXT trading. Short selling is not allowed in the NXT pre- and after-markets; rules for the overlapping main session must be checked against the current Korean short-selling regime.

What international investors should check

  • Broker and custodian support: A Korean venue may exist without being exposed by your overseas broker, DMA platform or omnibus arrangement.
  • Session and timezone: All times in this guide are KST (UTC+9). Korea does not observe daylight saving time.
  • Venue field: Confirm whether your ticket supports NXT directly, SOR only, or KRX only.
  • Market data: Ask whether the screen shows KRX, NXT or consolidated quotes and whether they are real time or delayed.
  • Order persistence: NXT states that a regular-market order generally remains valid until the end of its regular market unless canceled, across its session divisions. Your broker may impose narrower validity.
  • Official close: Use the KRX closing auction price when a mandate, NAV process, benchmark or report requires the Korean official close.
  • Eligible name: Do not assume every KOSPI or KOSDAQ stock is available on NXT. Check the live eligible-securities list.
  • Total cost: A venue’s lower execution fee does not automatically equal the commission shown on your client statement.

Five common misunderstandings

“The company is dual-listed.”

No. NXT is a second execution venue for selected shares listed on KRX.

“The cheaper last price is automatically buyable.”

Check the current offer, available size and delay. A last trade is not a standing quote.

“SOR always guarantees the lowest price.”

SOR follows the broker’s policy using observable conditions at a point in time; outcomes can change before execution.

“NXT’s 20:00 price becomes the official close.”

The official daily close remains the price determined by the KRX closing auction.

“An NXT order must expire at every session break.”

NXT’s general rule allows regular-market orders to remain valid until its market ends unless canceled, but broker settings may differ.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nextrade a stock exchange?

In everyday language it is often called Korea’s alternative exchange. Legally and operationally, it is Korea’s first alternative trading system, a multilateral trading facility for eligible KRX-listed shares and depositary receipts. It is not a second listing board for the issuer.

Do I own a different share if my order fills on NXT?

No. You own the same security with the same corporate rights. The execution report records which venue matched the trade.

Can I buy on NXT and later sell on KRX?

In principle the position is the same security, so the acquisition venue does not create a venue-locked share. Actual sale timing still depends on settlement, account controls, broker systems and applicable trading rules.

Which price is Korea’s official closing price?

The KRX closing-auction price. NXT can trade after 15:30 and display a later price, but that does not rewrite the day’s official KRX close.

Can a foreign investor trade the NXT pre- and after-markets?

It depends on the executing broker, custodian arrangement, account type and market-data/order-routing support. Confirm access with the intermediary rather than assuming that KRX access automatically includes NXT.

Is NXT after-market trading the same as US after-hours trading?

No. Both extend trading beyond a primary exchange session, but eligibility, order types, price limits, official closing-price rules, market safeguards and broker access are Korean-market specific.

Where can I verify the current timetable and eligible stocks?

Use the official NXT trading-system page, the live NXT eligible-securities menu and your broker’s notice. For KRX hours and settlement, use the Global KRX trading guide.

The practical takeaway

  1. Treat KRX and NXT as two order books for one KRX-listed security, not two different stocks.
  2. During overlapping hours, compare executable price and size—not merely the latest trade.
  3. Know whether your broker is using KRX, NXT or SOR and read its best-execution policy.
  4. Use the KRX auction close when an official Korean closing price is required.
  5. Recheck current hours, security eligibility and broker support before trading outside the traditional session.
